The power of decluttering

A client's journey from overwhelmed to organized.

When we first met Sarah (name changed for privacy), she was hesitant to show us her bathroom. Her bathtub had turned into a storage unit (Sarah is not alone here! Many, many people use their bathtubs as storage.).

Sure enough, the tub was overflowing—not with water, but with clothes, towels, random toiletries, and even a few unopened Amazon boxes. Somewhere along the way, Sarah had stopped using her bathtub. Every time she needed to clean up in a hurry, she tossed something in. Every time she couldn’t find space in her closet, she made room in the tub.

What started as a temporary solution had turned into a daily frustration.

Why Clutter Sneaks Up on Us

Sarah’s story is far more common than you might think. Clutter doesn’t happen overnight—it builds slowly, item by item, until suddenly, an entire space is unusable. It’s overwhelming, and the more we ignore it, the bigger the problem feels.

But here’s the thing: clutter is not just physical. It weighs on us emotionally, too. Sarah wasn’t just missing out on baths—she was carrying the mental burden of a space she couldn’t fully use.

The Decluttering Transformation

That’s where a professional organizer comes in. Together, we:

Sorted through the clutter – We categorized everything in the tub into keep, donate, and discard piles. Many of the items had simply been placed there out of convenience, not necessity.

Created a system for clothing & storage – We reorganized Sarah’s closet and dresser to ensure she had designated places for the clothing that had been piling up.

Set boundaries for what belongs in the bathroom – The bathtub was no longer a “catch-all” for miscellaneous items. Instead, we created proper storage solutions for towels, toiletries, and everyday essentials.

Restored functionality – Finally, Sarah’s bathtub was empty and ready to be used again.

And the best part? When she stepped back and saw the transformation, she didn’t just see a clean bathtub—she felt a sense of relief. “I can’t believe I put up with this for so long,” she said. “I feel like I have my bathroom back.”

The Bigger Lesson

Decluttering isn’t just about having a tidy space. It’s about taking back control of your home and your life. When we let go of excess stuff, we make room for more peace, ease, and even simple joys—like a long, relaxing soak in the tub.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by clutter, start small. Choose one space, one drawer, or even one corner to reclaim. And if it feels too big to tackle alone, don’t be afraid to bring in a professional organizer.

Because your home should work for you—not the other way around.
